Set up an atfs server

This page prepares a new atfs server; it generates its ID on the network, saves its settings to your atproto account, and shows you how to get your instance running.

Everything happens in this browser tab. The server’s secret key is made here and sent nowhere: not to atfs.dev, not to your account. You will be asked to save it yourself, because nothing else will have a copy.

First, choose where you will be running your server. The guide will adjust to match.

You can download the raw SD-card .img files if you want to update a running instance.

  1. 1. Sign in

The server’s settings live in a record on your atproto account. Signing in lets this page write that record for you — you will approve it on your own server, and this page never sees your password.

  2. 2. Give the server its identity

Every atfs server has a permanent name on the file-sharing network, worked out from a secret key. Make a new one for a new server, or paste the key you saved last time to rebuild a server that already exists.

  3. 3. Choose its settings

The web address people will use to reach this server. Uploads stay switched off until it is set, but you can add it later from your account — leave it blank if you do not know it yet.

    Who may upload

Owning the server does not by itself allow you to upload to it — you have to be listed here like anyone else.

Handles are looked up and stored as DIDs, so they keep working if someone renames themselves.

  4. 4. Write the card image

The card image has space reserved for these settings. Writing them in now means the device knows who it is before it has ever been switched on.
